Here are some samples of poems I have written:
The Coat
(Written in memory of my mom’s “German Shepherd” coat)
It was beginning to turn cold in the Fall of that year.
The shoppers were out shopping for deals.
My mother came home this particular day
So excited she started to reel.
“Oh you won’t believe it, look what I found”
“It’s absolutely, positively fantastic!”
Her eyes lit up and her fingers trembled
As she slowly began removing the plastic.
My brother and I secretly exchanged a glance
And then quickly averted our eyes.
We couldn’t believe what we were looking at
This is mom’s coveted prize?
It was a coat. In a patchwork pattern.
Made out of fake fur, it looked stiff.
I carefully went over, reached out and touched it
Then I slowly bent over and sniffed.
I had to think quickly and hide my surprise.
It reminded me of something of record
And then it hit me like a ton of bricks
The neighbor next door’s German Shepherd!
We were kind children my brother and I.
We kept our little secret for years,
But now sometimes, we think about it still
And laugh until we’re both shedding tears.
Dear Dad
(Written for Father’s Day from the four dogs)
You wake us each morning with a big “Rubba Dubba”
You even got us a brand new Mudda!
We are the luckiest dogs on the whole big block
Even the neighbor dogs think you rock!
We’re so happy sometimes we can hardly stand it
Free Scroobie snacks always, we just demand it!
But one things for sure, Sweet Doggie Dad
Run out of Scroobies and things will be bad.
Holes in your socks and poop in your shoes!
We’ll be sneaky and leave no clues
We’ll get in the trash and spread it around
We’ll be the terribleist, meanest, worst ever hounds!
So carry on with the Scroobies and the Rubba Dubbas too
Keep on loving us, just like you do
And we’ll be snuggly, cute and sweet
And you won’t find yourself living on the street!
That Day In July
(Excerpt from a poem written for a birthday)
It happened one day at the end of July,
Something so wonderful it made the angels cry!
After much anticipation, the day was here,
The most exquisite little thing appeared.
She was cute! Adorable! A sight to behold!
A gem from heaven, or so I’ve been told.
“Oh look, she’s smiling, all curled up in her bed!”
“She’s smiling all over from her toes to her head!”
Mom and Dad named her Carolyn and then it was Lyn
And this is how her story begins.
The cute little thing grew up and became quite smart,
But her very best asset was to be her big heart.
A Promise Made
(Excerpt from a poem written for a 30th anniversary)
It all took place quite a few years back
So much time has passed it’s hard to keep track.
A girl, a guy, a Church and a ring
Promises made and dreams to dream.
After some time and some hoping and prayer
Something was different with this lucky pair.
Richard and Vicki then Kari made three!
Prouder parents there will never be.
The family worked together to make dreams come true.
Through the ups and downs their love just grew.
Holding it all together wasn’t always easy you see,
But that promise they made, yes, that was the key.
